Uterine Fibroid Embolization

Minimally Invasive, Image-Guided Treatment for Uterine Fibroids Without Major Surgery

Dr. Jeffrey Apo

What Is Uterine Fibroid Embolization?

Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is a minimally invasive treatment that blocks the blood supply to fibroids in the uterus, causing them to shrink over time. Using image guidance, a catheter is inserted into the uterine arteries, and tiny particles are injected to block the blood flow to the fibroids.

This procedure offers an effective alternative to surgery for women suffering from heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, or pressure due to fibroids—without needing to remove the uterus.

Who Is It For?

UFE is ideal for women who:

  • Have symptomatic fibroids (e.g., heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, pressure)
  • Want to avoid surgery such as hysterectomy or myomectomy
  • Prefer a uterus-sparing, minimally invasive option
  • Are not planning to become pregnant in the future (UFE is not recommended for women actively pursuing pregnancy)

Key Benefits:

  • Minimally invasive with only a small incision
  • No need for general anesthesia
  • Preserves the uterus
Short recovery time (often back to routine in a week)
  • Effective relief from fibroid symptoms in most patients

Common Uses:

UFE is used to treat:

  • Multiple or large uterine fibroids
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding due to fibroids
  • Pelvic pain or pressure
  • Frequent urination caused by fibroid pressure
  • Fibroid-related anemia

FAQs: Uterine Fibroid Embolization

You may need imaging tests like an MRI or ultrasound beforehand. You’ll also be advised to fast the night before and follow pre-procedure medication instructions.

A small catheter is inserted into an artery (usually in the groin). Tiny embolic particles are delivered to block the fibroids’ blood supply. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia with sedation.

Most patients stay overnight and return to light activities in about a week. Cramping and fatigue are normal for a few days.
